Paraguay is one of the lesser known but most delightful of Latin American countries. It is land-locked so beach worshippers had better look elsewhere! What it lacks in coast it more than makes up for in rich, tropical forest and a way of life from a bygone age.
It is possibly one of the cheapest countries to stay in Latin America . You can still dine out in style, with wine, and have change from a fiver (and that’s for two!). Asuncion , the capital city, does not share the opulence of some other Latin American cities but go inland for about an hour and you will find possibly one of the best retreats on earth.

Casa del Monte is a haven of relaxation in the midst of forest. Previously a run-down estancia, Don Carlos has transformed it into a health spa where luxury combines with an ecological experience. He will take you on treks into the forest either on horseback or on foot. You will see an amazing array of wildlife and learn all about the healing powers of the plants. Some of these herbs can be sampled in the simple but delicious food on offer in his roof-top restaurant where you can eat while looking at an unrivalled panoramic view over the tree-tops.
After the days activities, you can relax by the pool or in the health centre where a sauna and massage will take away the aches of forest trekking!
