This is the fourth largest country in the world. It takes over six hours to travel from north to south by plane – the time it takes to cross the Atlantic . Most of its vast interior is still unexplored. There are tribes which have still not seen other human beings and who are blissfully unaware of events in the outside world.

Where can you begin to explore a country as rich and as diverse as this? We all know about the Amazon rain forest and have probably heard about Manaus , the once opulent capital set deep within the tropical rain forest – so immensely rich from rubber revenue that it boasted its very own opera house.

How many Waterfall - Holidays to Brazilof us know about the hundreds of indigenous tribes which still live in the forest – each with its own unique language and culture? How many of us realise the wealth of medicines and potential cures for some of our modern diseases which are buried within this vast jungle?

A stay in the Amazon rain forest is unforgettable – not easy – but truly unforgettable! The jungle is never quiet, from the dawn chorus of morning bird song and monkeys to the night chorus of frogs and other mysterious creatures. Feel at one with nature.

Caiman - BrazilIf you want to see more wildlife then a stay in the Pantanal is a must. This is the biggest wetland in the world and home to an enormous array of wildlife which is more visible in the open wetlands than in the dense forest of the Amazon. Here, to be awoken at dawn to a chorus of birds of all colours and sizes, is to be in paradise.

The Pantanal reaches into Argentina , Bolivia and Paraguay and offers the most memorable experience of unspoilt nature. Where else can you swim with cayman, unmolested and observe birds at such close range because they have never learnt fear of humans?

Carnival - BrazilThere are so many varied regions of Brazil and each is unique. Take for example the Chapada area which looks for all the world like a landscape from another planet! Or the northeast coastal area of Bahia where the intensive importation of negro slaves from the west coast of Africa for over two hundred years has enriched the ethnic mix of cultures and given rise to the distinctive dance of the region – the Samba!

Rio de Janeiro in February is a must to see original Samba in the carnival.
