Refugio da Ilha is a typical Pantanal pousada with most charming, rustic farmhouse accommodation catering for all the needs of nature lovers visiting this area. Located in the Miranda region on a river island of 4,000 hectares in the heart of the Salobra delta, it is just 40 meters from crystal clear waters (apart from July to September) in the main stream, circulating around bays and marshland with innumerable species of birds and animals, including caiman. The pousada offers the visitor an unforgettable experience of Pantanal wildlife beyond their wildest dreams.
The riverbeds of Refugio da Ilha are divided in two and are very narrow, making easy, detailed observation of plants and animals. You can get within a few meters of an animal on the river bank. (see the video)
Concerned with conservation of the environment and with security and quality of attention to their guests, the pousada caters for only a limited number of visitors, a fact which creates an excellent alternative for those wanting to escape the stress of conventional mass tourism and sample the
calm scenery and customs of the Pantanal.
There are 7 comfortable en-suite bedrooms with air conditioning and a natural alarm call courtesy of the dawn chorus provided by a whole array of birds of different sizes and colours. There are two bars, a small library, a riverside summerhouse for lunchtime barbecues, a jetty, an observation deck and of course a natural swimming pool. The menu is varied and always offers delicious regional dishes, including vegetarian. Both the hosts, who live on the premises, and their staff, ensure that their guests are made to feel at home with a warm welcome!
